The problems highlighted by the map comparison are a lack of points of interest in Caldera and a startling amount of empty space. Plenty has been said about the lack of named locations in Caldera, with a fan recently coming up with their own points of interest that would make the battle royale map livelier. For comparison, Verdansk had 22 named areas for players to land at, loot, and fight in. Caldera only has 15 unique, named areas, limiting the variety of places that gamers can land at.

While the lack of points of interest is certainly a contributing factor when it comes to the community’s disappointment in Caldera, the other issue is the map’s empty space. This is what the side-by-side comparison from Reddit user and Call of Duty: Warzone fan juwong_ homes in on. In the edited image, empty space is highlighted in red, and one glance should instantly make it clear just how different Caldera and Verdansk are in terms of their designs.
When it comes to Verdansk, the red space is not only limited, but it is kept to the outskirts of the map. The entire center of the play space is filled with places to go and explore, with the empty areas found in places that gamers would likely never want to go. While the Redditor does leave some empty space on Verdansk untouched, there is still a major difference between the maps. Caldera, on the other hand, is almost entirely covered in red space. The map is the opposite of Verdansk in the sense that all its red space is found in the center, with a vast majority of the named locations placed on the outskirts of the map. The large volcano is also a contributing factor to this problem.
This is likely the reason that streams such as TimTheTatman dubbed Caldera boring after trying it. If players do not land on the edges of the map, they will encounter a ton of empty space. Further, the circle is likely to move to the center of the map, meaning that the storm regularly pushes players away from unique locations and toward large stretches of unused space. Clearly, Caldera needs to fill in red spots marked by the fan’s map.
Hopefully, Call of Duty: Warzone’s 2022 content will see the layout of Caldera altered significantly. With so much criticism, Raven Software has likely heard the requests to make Caldera more interesting to play in the upcoming Seasons.
Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
