A recent tweet from Treyarch, the developer responsible for the Zombies content in the otherwise Sledgehammer Games-helmed Call of Duty title, lays out all the new additions set to arrive in Zombies when Season 2 officially begins on February 14. Most crucially, the update will introduce Terra Maledicta, the first DLC map for Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies. It’s difficult to gauge the size and scope of the map based on what’s currently available, but it is known that Terra Maledicta will function exactly as Der Anfang did, with a central hub area acting as a staging ground for players to visit between missions.

Beyond that, the update will introduce three new mission locations in the form of the Corrupted Lands, the Eastern Desert, and the Hall of Truth. These locations seem to be far more unique than the recycled locations visited in Der Anfang, though it isn’t clear if these new locations will be exclusive to Terra Maledicta or if they can be found in both Zombies maps. There’s also a pause feature said to be in the works, though it goes unmentioned in the update.
The Call of Duty: Vanguard Season 2 update will also include two new Wonder Weapons, staple Zombies armaments of which longtime fans certainly felt the absence. The Ray Gun, a classic sci-fi-inspired weapon, will return alongside the Decimator Shield, which, while technically new, seems very similar to items previously seen in prior Call of Duty Zombies experiences.
Just as things like Pack-a-Punch camos and Wonder Weapons return to Call of Duty Zombies after an inexplicable absence during Call of Duty: Vanguard’s launch period, bona fide Easter egg quests will also be implemented into Der Anfang and, presumably, Terra Maledicta. These convoluted questlines dominated the Zombies experiences in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and the announcement that Call of Duty: Vanguard would not receive a proper Easter egg until Season 2 was a shock to many.
Other inclusions like a new boss zombie, a new covenant, and a new mission objective will help to further flesh out the formerly bare-bones Zombies experience. While some still feel that Treyarch has a very long way to go before Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Zombies mode is up to snuff, Season 2 nevertheless represents an important step forward in the mode’s development.
Call of Duty: Vanguard is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
