According to Call of Duty outlet Charlie Intel, Call of Duty: Vanguard has a significantly reduced file size compared to Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War. Where Cold War takes up 95GB on PS4, 133GB on PS5, 93GB on Xbox One, and 136GB on Xbox Series X/S, Call of Duty: Vanguard will only consume 54.65GB on PS4, 64.13GB on PS5, 56GB on Xbox One, and 61GB on Xbox Series X/S when it releases. Because Vanguard isn’t graphically inferior compared to Cold War, this notable file size difference between the games may illustrate more efforts in compressing files.

Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War followed the popular release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare which also struggled to keep a low file size. With the reduced file size of Call of Duty: Vanguard, the trend of oversized Call of Duty downloads may be left behind when the next title in the series releases. Call of Duty titles from recent years are continually updated and the file size grows as a result so it may not be surprising to see Vanguard narrow the file size gap as the Seasons release.

A typical Call of Duty Season brings with it new content that needs to be downloaded by players. Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War saw updates to the map rotation, new weapons, and new Zombies content. Call of Duty: Vanguard players will be able to expect a similar post-launch content rollout, but the file size may never rival that of Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War’s.

Although many other big games such as Sea of Thieves and Fortnite have been updated to reduce file size, Call of Duty has been consistently rising in size for years. Because Call of Duty: Vanguard will be smaller than Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War when it releases, Call of Duty fans who only keep up with the latest title will be able to fit more games on the 50% extra storage space.

Cold War currently has a download bug that forces some players to download the entirety of the game rather than its most recent update. Because Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War is already topping 100GB on the new consoles, this results in potentially deleting other stored items and waiting an extended period of time just to play the FPS.

Call of Duty: Vanguard releases for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on November 5.
