Given the nature of LMGs, one with high firepower is hard to resist. Yes, its recoil is nasty in bursts. So when players open up Call of Duty: Vanguard and put together a loadout, they have to decide whether to go with extra damage or reduce the recoil. After some testing, there is a clear choice.

Operator

Any

Unfortunately, no operator lists the Bren as their favorite weapon. If an operator has a favorite weapon, using it gives the weapon and the operator a boost to experience. The Bren will take longer to level up because of this slight snag.

The good news is that anybody who has unlocked all of the operators will be able to use their favorite operator without the guilt of missing out on experience. While it might take longer, at max level, it won’t matter which operator uses what weapon, so it’s just going to take some extra time.

Attachments

Contrary to most guns, the Bren has a bigger problem with horizontal recoil than vertical recoil, which is why some of the recoil reduction options are a bit unorthodox. This loadout helps with that without diluting the damage the Bren is capable of doing from long range.

Players using this loadout will quickly discover why it’s not part of the starting weapon selection. The damage and fire rate a very high for a gun that functions at such a long distance. It’s like an automatic marksman rifle in the hands of the right player.

Secondary Weapon

MK11 Launcher

Some of the maps are good, some of the maps are great, but all of them have places where fighting at close or mid-range is prone to happen. The Bren excels at long range, but close-range combat is bound to happen. When it does, players will need a plan.

The MK11 Launcher is a great backup plan for those enemies that approach. The movement speed and aiming down sights for the Bren aren’t impressive, so it’s best to switch off of the gun entirely and use one with deadly results.

Perks

Having perks would have helped on a number of campaign missions, but the game makes it up to the players in the multiplayer mode. A common choice for long-ranged weapons, Cold Blooded keeps players safe by hiding them from killstreak rewards.

High Alert is a lifesaver against stealthy opponents that get to the side or behind the Bren user. Lastly, Tactician caps off an important means for the player to protect themselves, especially if they find a great shooting position that they don’t want to move too far away from.

Lethal Slot

Thermite

A nice can of Thermite would have helped get the “Ticket Please” achievement. It’s got a good amount of damage, but, more importantly, it closes down a route for a good amount of time. This can force players away from a corridor and shuffle them toward an open path.

Too often, players try to make a gun work in a situation that the gun isn’t designed for. Talented players might be able to make this work sometimes, but even they won’t be able to do this against opponents at their same skill level. The best move is to force others to attack at the range that benefits the Bren the most.

Tactical Slot

S-Mine 44

The S-Mine 44 is a phenomenal piece of equipment how backline combatants. Players can’t constantly be defending every position around them. Splitting focus means occasionally looking away from the area where the Bren is most deadly.

Plants some mines all around. Thanks to the Tactician perk, players will get another one every thirty seconds. These aren’t lethal, but they can become that way; upon hearing a mine go off, snap towards the noise, fire, and look back to the field.

Killstreaks

Care Package Mortar Barrage Emergency Airdrop

Care Package and Emergency Airdrops are almost too automatic for long-ranged weapons like the Bren. It’s easy to call them down from safety and the rewards inside are almost always worth more than the kills it takes to get them. They don’t always help the individual player, but they can help the entire team.

Mortar Barrage is a good killstreak reward because it can help kill opposing long-range opponents. By dropping this on the enemy backlines, players will have to move in closer. From an elevated position, the Bren can take out these targets with ease.

Field Upgrade

Deployable Cover

The rest of this loadout focuses on the range of the Bren, but it is, ultimately, an LMG and not a sniper rifle. So it’s doesn’t quite have the extended range of other weapons. This means players will be incurring more than the usual amount of risk in combat.

Much of that risk is negated with the Deployable Cover. It has a fast cooldown, so anytime players find themselves in an ideal spot, plop it down and camp out. Aside from sniper rifle users, enemies will have a very hard time landing a shot.
