This revelation came about when professional Call of Duty player Dillon “Attach” Price posted a clip of his PS4 being especially loud while playing Modern Warfare. This prompted some other professional Call of Duty players to chime in and confirm that they have also experienced the issue. One person even showed how Modern Warfare was making their PS4 console overheat to the point that it was shutting down.

The general consensus seems to be that the Modern Warfare PS4 overheating issue is caused by the game’s lobby screen. It’s believed that the lobby has an uncapped framerate, and so the animation of multiplayer characters walking in the background is making the consoles run harder than they should. However, that’s just speculation at this time. Infinity Ward itself has yet to comment on the issue at the time of this writing, so it’s unclear exactly what may be causing it or if there is a potential fix.
This isn’t the first time that Modern Warfare has been associated with consoles shutting down unexpectedly. When the game first launched, there was reportedly an issue of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare making the Xbox One X shut down, prompting an investigation into the matter by Infinity Ward. Presumably, Infinity Ward will investigate this reported issue with Modern Warfare overheating PS4s as well, though nothing has been announced just yet.
If the issue is something that can be patched, then it’s possible a fix will come in the next update. Infinity Ward releases new Modern Warfare updates on a weekly basis, often adding new content like maps and game modes, while also fixing bugs. The next Modern Warfare update is coming on Tuesday, June 30, and so players that are impacted by this issue should keep an eye on the patch notes just in case.
In the meantime, it should be stressed that Warzone players have encountered the same PS4 overheating issue while in the lobby, so fans of both titles should try not to leave their game sitting idle in the lobby menu for the time being.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
