Gunfight Tournaments is expected to return to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare as part of the Tuesday, July 7 update. For the uninitiated, Gunfight Tournaments is a special mode where players have to win four matches in a row. Those that manage to complete win a Gunfight Tournament can unlock bonus XP and other unique rewards, with the grand prize this time around being a new assault rifle blueprint. However, Infinity Ward has stopped short of revealing exactly what the new Gunfight Tournaments blueprint looks like.

Speaking of blueprints, Blueprint Gunfight will still be available in the playlists after the July 7 update. Blueprint Gunfight decks players out with special custom weapons as they compete in the 2v2 battles, and could be a good way to practice for Gunfight Tournaments. Other Gunfight variants will not be added to the game this week, however.
Infinity Ward has experimented with some other versions of Gunfight since Modern Warfare first launched last year. One of the more popular variants was the 3v3 Gunfight mode, though there has also been Gunfight OSP, which was not nearly as well-received. Gunfight OSP replaced standard Gunfight for some time, but it changed up the flow of the gameplay significantly by having players loot for their equipment instead of starting everyone out with the same gear. Many felt this defeated the purpose of Gunfight, and so Infinity Ward didn’t take long to swap it out with standard Gunfight.
Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see how the Gunfight concept evolves in the Call of Duty franchise, both inside Modern Warfare and beyond. Call of Duty Mobile has added its own version of Gunfight, though rumors indicate that Call of Duty 2020 won’t have Gunfight. Considering how popular the mode is, it’s a bit surprising that it will supposedly be skipping the new game, but fans can expect it to make a comeback at some point down the line.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
