Taking to Twitter, Infinity Ward explained why it decided to remove the Al-Raab Airbase and Drainage maps from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. According to the developer, the maps were removed because they weren’t “quite ready,” and needed some more development time. Infinity Ward then promised that it would update fans on when the maps would be returning to the game, but it didn’t offer a timetable as to when that may happen.

Al-Raab Airbase was a new map for the standard Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer mode, whereas Drainage was a Gunfight map. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare remains incredibly popular, even with Black Ops Cold War readily available, and so it’s safe to say many fans will be happy when these maps are added back to the game.

Once the Drainage and Al-Raab Airbase maps are added back to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it will be interesting to see if they are still stuck in private matches or if they are made a part of the regular map lineup. One would imagine that they would be thrown into the existing playlists, and will likely even have their own 24/7 playlists, not unlike the Killhouse map. However, Infinity Ward hasn’t clarified at the time of this writing.

With new maps coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, some fans may still have hope that the game will be getting some other content as well. A proper Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 7 was rumored, but never came to pass, so maybe Infinity Ward will re-release these maps as part of that. Then again, Infinity Ward may want to focus its efforts on its next Call of Duty game instead, rumored to be a Modern Warfare sequel.

If a Modern Warfare Season 7 does happen, though, leakers have let us know what fans may expect from it. Besides these new maps, rumors have pointed to a potential Modern Warfare Season 7 adding new guns as well as Soap as a playable Operator. However, nothing official has been announced, and so fans shouldn’t get their hopes up for anything beyond the return of the Al-Raab Airbase and Drainage maps to the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
