In prior Call of Duty games, when a player took damage in a multiplayer match, the screen would begin to flash red around the outer edges with the severity depending on the overall damage taken. However, Infinity Ward has taken a new approach this time around, swapping out the bleeding effect for a black and white screen that lasts for a significant amount of time.

In a post on the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare subreddit, developer Infinity Ward outlined some changes they’re making based on feedback received from players during the Alpha which included a fix to setting changes not being saved, a reduction to a certain line of dialogue that’s appearing a little too frequently, and audio changes to both player and enemy footsteps. One piece of feedback categorized as “being working on” related to the black and white screen. Here’s what the developer had to say:
While it’s clear that the issue is on their radar, the above statement only provides a description of how the new function works and no information on how and when the developer might be addressing the feedback. Infinity Ward also confirmed that a brand new map called Stack is being added into the map rotation, as well as a new variant mode called 2v2 Pickup.
Just like the removal of the mini-map, the black and white “near-death” screen is one of many new features being introduced in Modern Warfare in an attempt to reinvent the popular FPS series multiplayer mode. Not all changes are going to be immediately met with open arms, but it’s clear that Infinity Ward is listening to player feedback and trying to keep an open dialogue with fans.
