The Call of Duty series has a legacy of post credits surprises, with the most prominent example being the very first appearance of Zombies in Call of Duty: World at War. Treyarch continued this trend in the original Black Ops with the bonus Zombies map Five, and Black Ops 2 featured a hilarious parody scene where all the characters partied at an Avenged Sevenfold concert. Infinity Ward has taken part in the fun with the museum in 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, so it makes sense for the studio to revive the concept with its latest game.

The Possibilities For a Post Credits Secret in Modern Warfare 2

With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 not featuring Zombies, a surprise map like Five is out of the question. However, that does not rule out the possibility of a teaser for another kind of bonus mode. Though reports on such a mode have died down in recent months, there were rumblings of a PT-like horror mode for Modern Warfare 2 early on. This would be a perfect post credits surprise, as it would shock and scare audiences just like Nacht Der Untoten did in 2008.

Another museum could be featured, working just like the one in the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and its campaign remaster. This special bonus not only made for some visually pleasing credits, but being to walk around and look at memorable scenes from the story mode was a joy. Players could also pick up and play around with the campaign’s various weapons, and for a bit of extra fun, Infinity Ward let them press a button that turned all the mannequins hostile - letting them engage in a massive shootout through the museum.

Yet another possibility would be a bonus level that takes place after the events of the campaign, similar to the challenging but memorable “Mile High Club” from Call of Duty 4. This hypothetical bonus mission could test the skills of players or serve as a sort of epilogue to the story, wrapping up lose ends and bringing closure for certain character arcs. Having one last hoorah as Task Force 141 could leave players on a high note, which may be necessary since the Modern Warfare 2 mission list suggests tragedy is coming.

The final possibility is the simplest, but also the most likely. If it wanted to, Infinity Ward could take after the Marvel Cinematic Universe and feature a post credits scene for fans to enjoy. A beloved character like Roach could be teased for Task Force 141, while a feared foe like Makarov could be established as the third game’s main villain. A twist like General Shepherd being an enemy could also be hinted at, but left vague enough to keep players theorizing and searching other modes like Spec Ops for clues.

Though the early access release for Modern Warfare 2’s campaign does limit Infinity Ward a bit when it comes to a post credits surprise, as a hidden co-op mode or bonus Spec Ops mission couldn’t be featured with the multiplayer component being disabled, a lot is still on the table. A teaser-filled cinematic, museum, or bonus singleplayer mission would be a great way to make the latest Call of Duty campaign feel just as special as those that came before.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
