The Modern Warfare 2 reveal trailer showcased many pertinent set pieces and rough plot elements for the game’s story, with many fans noting significant similarities to the original trilogy. Despite 2019’s Modern Warfare also being a reboot title, it seems that its upcoming sequel is doing more to encapsulate the same high-octane and over-the-top gameplay of the original games.

The Basics of Modern Warfare 2
Given the acclaim for 2019’s Modern Warfare, it is fair to say that news of a sequel has long been anticipated and met with joy by many fans of the franchise. Fortunately, fans have been provided a release date for the game, with the recent reveal trailer for Modern Warfare 2 also giving a more intimate insight into some of the finer details regarding the title.
It is rumored that Modern Warfare 2 is set to run on a brand-new game engine, with it is being safe to assume that it will take inspiration from the same visceral IW engine that was used in 2019’s Modern Warfare, with a focus on high fidelity and accurate sound design. It has also been heavily rumored that Modern Warfare 2 will launch alongside a sequel to the massively popular Call of Duty battle royale Warzone. If the game is to launch alongside Warzone 2, it would be a clear statement of intent from Activision as to the intended scale and longevity of Modern Warfare 2.
The Campaign of Modern Warfare 2 will predictably build upon that of its predecessor, with Captain Price and Gaz making welcome returns. It is confirmed that MW2’s campaign will largely concern the elite Task Force 141, with iconic characters Soap and Ghost making their reboot campaign debuts.
How Modern Warfare 2’s Campaign Seems Closer to the Originals
From what can be seen of Modern Warfare 2’s campaign from the recent reveal trailer, it is clear that it is aiming to be expansive, grand, and action-packed. With a comprehensive cast of classic characters being showcased amidst the heat of battle, the scale and stakes of Modern Warfare 2’s campaign seem to be paying serious respects to its source material in more ways than one.
One of the more overt ways in which MW2 seems to be more akin to the original trilogy comes in the showcasing of extremely similar key plot points. From the limited glimpse of the campaign seen by the reveal trailer, Task Force 141 seemingly come across a nuclear warhead hidden within a shipping container, in a way very similar to the original Modern Warfare campaign. The trailer also showcased an oil rig infiltration, an iconic mission within the original Modern Warfare 2.
On the other hand, 2019’s Modern Warfare was a much more intimate and muted experience, nodding towards its source material while focusing on a mostly unique plot. Aside from featuring the likes of Gaz and Captain Price, the 2019 title was focused more on covert and small-scale warfare, tackling terrorism and engaging in foreign rebellions.
While this was of course a factor of the original trilogy, the warfare on display quickly became global, with the original Modern Warfare franchise essentially showcasing a Third World War via the launching of nuclear warheads and an invasion of America by Russian forces. The upcoming Modern Warfare 2 appears to be grounded in this brand of more intense and directly consequential fighting, while providing a more informed roster of classic characters that is inexorably going to give the title a more old school feeling than its predecessor.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set to release on October 28.
