Lots of information about the franchise was revealed during the recent Call of Duty Next event, letting fans know that remainder of the year will be packed with content. Following the release of Modern Warfare 2 in October, gamers can also expect Warzone 2.0 in November. The open beta for Modern Warfare 2 began on September 16 for PlayStation players who have pre-ordered, and it will open up to all platforms on September 24.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Features a Third-Person Playlist

Call of Duty has specialized in first-person shooter gameplay for most of its history. However, it has dabbled in third-person gameplay, and this was seen in 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This feature will be making a return with this year’s Modern Warfare 2, allowing players to switch to third-person during online play. As has been explained, a third-person playlist will exist alongside the regular first-person playlist. Gamers can expect third-person in Multiplayer Playlists, private Multiplayer lobbies, and co-op, and the feature will also make it to Warzone 2.0 when it launches in November this year.

With a third-person perspective in Call of Duty, players will gain a wider view of the playing field, which could have significant implications on how players experience even the most familiar game modes. By default, the third-person camera will be positioned a few feet behind players, giving them an over-the-shoulder perspective. While this makes it a tad more difficult to see what is directly in front of one’s character, it does allow one to better see enemies in one’s peripheral vision. Players will be able to adjust the third-person perspective camera, and they can decide whether they prefer to peek over their character’s left shoulder or right shoulder, and players can choose to look through their gun’s sights or not when they aim.

Third-Person Camera Is Great For Operator Skins

The third-person perspective will affect how players strategize, but it will also allow them to appreciate their Operators more during matches. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will feature its own set of Operators, including a PlayStation-exclusive Operator named Oni who is a fusion of a Japanese samurai and a military soldier.

Reception to third-person in Call of Duty has typically been positive, and when a bug in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare enabled third-person gameplay, gamers fell in love with it. Operators have always been cool, but they have been something to show off to others, as players cannot enjoy how their Operator looks while they are playing from a first-person perspective. The switch to third-person could make gamers care much more about customizing their operators.

The addition of a third-person mode illustrates that after all these years, the Call of Duty franchise is still willing to take risks. Fans on PlayStation have faced anxiety recently as rumors have swirled around that the series may become an Xbox exclusive following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision. However, it appears that this will not happen any time soon, as Microsoft’s Phil Spencer has confirmed that the series will appear on PlayStation for years to come.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is scheduled to release on October 28, 2022, on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
